DIY Days in Nashville

Since we have been without reliable internet for the past week or so, I will make a few catch-up posts.
Kate wrote this on Wednesday, Nov 15 at the Grand Ole RV Report in Goodlettsville, TN just NE of Nashville.

We have been very productive the last few days!  The trailer problems we discovered on our arrival were all manageable and relatively easy to fix.  Rather than taking the trailer to a repair shop, Kevin fixed it all!   First, he reseated the freezer door while I researched a solution to the door opening while we travel, spilling the contents on the trailer floor.  The solution we came up with was to install window latches at the edge of the freezer and fridge doors.  Now, we just latch it prior to traveling and it blocks the doors from opening.  While he was at it, he added additional inside latches to all the cabinet and closet doors to prevent them from opening while we travel.  It hasn’t happened yet, but the freezer door had never opened before this trip.

Next, it was on to the propane leak.  Once a little soapy water isolated the leak, finding the right size fitting was the biggest challenge.  Camping World had what we needed and Kevin made short work of that repair.   We enjoyed using our gas stove top to make dinner.  We had been using an electric hot plate which we like to use when we have hook-ups in order to save the propane for dry camping (camping with no hook-ups.)

The tongue jack was the most challenging problem.  This is what supports the front of the trailer when it is not hooked up to the car.  It was not clear whether the problem was the switch or the motor.  Since the switch was not much cheaper than a whole new jack, we ordered replacement jack.  The campground is great about accepting packages for the campers so getting it was no problem.  This repair was a little more challenging, requiring us to hook up the trailer to the car, remove the wheel chocks, and retract the stabilizers.  Kevin then removed the old tongue jack, replaced it with the new one and wired the new one to the trailer battery.  No more manually cranking to raise the front of the trailer!

It gave us a great feeling of accomplishment to get all these things done without any outside help. (We don’t need no sticking repair shop!)

There were other projects as well.  I cleaned the outside of the trailer and at one of our next stops, we will wax the front cap that has developed oxidation and looks pretty bad.  I also sanded down the sharp edges of the storage bins under the dinette benches.  We were sure one of us was going to cut our hands on the sharp edges eventually!  They are nice and smooth now.

Today, while Kevin did some shopping and began sanitizing the fresh water tanks, I did our laundry.  We rewarded ourselves with dinner at an east-side New York-style pizzeria (not bad, but overhyped and over-priced in my New Jerseyan opinion.)

Tomorrow, we will pack up and leave Nashville and the Grand Ole RV Resort.  We love it here in the Nashville area, but it’s time to move on!  Cold weather is approaching and there is so much more to see and do!

Blessings!
